ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Director of Finance, you will assume a pivotal role as the financial steward of the organization, wielding both strategic and hands-on oversight over a spectrum of critical responsibilities.
Your purview will encompass the strategic direction and execution of financial initiatives, including day-to-day financial operations, meticulous scrutiny of operational plans, and the orchestration of comprehensive monthly and annual reports.
Your adept management will extend to risk mitigation strategies, supporting a cross-functional approach to monitoring and managing risks being faced by regulatory bodies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports, along with annual and multi-year business and operational plans.
- Collaborate closely with the board of directors to offer financial reporting, analysis and training, serving as the subject matter expert for all financial operations.
- Leading and actively contributing to a high-functioning finance team.
- Maintaining an understanding of regulatory requirements, risk management, and financial accounting and operations.
- Serving as a key member of the leadership team, ensuring finance is a strategic priority, and participating in both board and finance sub-committee meetings.
- Enhancing financial operations through process improvement, policy design, project management and team leadership.
- Driving efficiency within financial operations by leveraging technology solutions to increase capacity.
- Maintaining oversite of accounting operations, including fee setting, invoicing, accounts payable, receivables, GL reconciliation, cost accounting, payroll and tax reporting.
- Overseeing the investigation and resolution of major budget variances and analyzing and preparing various financial reports and statistics.
- Conducting financial risk assessments and internal audits, implementing intervention strategies as needed.
- Cultivating relationships with external parties, such as auditors, insurance providers and financial institutions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related discipline. A master’s degree is preferred.
- A CPA designation is strongly preferred.
- Over 7 years of financial leadership in the not-for-profit sector. Experience in a regulatory body would be ideal. This should include an understanding of financial management and tax responsibilities for non-profits.
- Proven track record in devising and executing innovative strategies, including building multi-year strategies.
- Exceptional management skills, with the ability to think strategically, critically and creatively.
- Demonstrated experience in working with and managing accounting software.
- Proficiency in financial analysis, auditing and the annual budgeting process.
- A big-picture thinker with strong decision-making skills and independent judgement.
- Strong knowledge of accounting standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Demonstrated expertise in operational effectiveness and efficiencies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver financial information to non-financial professionals.
