About the Role
TK Elevator is seeking an experienced and proactive Director, Occupational Safety and Health, Canada, to oversee safety programs and initiatives across Canada.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations, reducing workplace risks, and driving a culture of health and safety.
A key focus of this role is Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention, identifying high-risk tasks and implementing controls to mitigate life-threatening hazards.
This position is based in Toronto, Ontario and requires regular travel within Canada.
Key Responsibilities
The Director, Occupational Safety and Health, Canada, will lead, mentor, and develop a team of health and safety professionals, building capability and accountability to contribute to a culture of continuous safety improvement throughout Canada.
Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention:
- Lead efforts to identify, assess, and mitigate SIF exposures across all locations.
- Develop and implement SIF prevention strategies, focusing on high-risk activities and critical safety controls.
- Partner with operational leaders to analyze trends in high-potential incidents (HPIs) and near-misses to proactively address hazards before they result in serious injuries.
- Conduct in-depth SIF-focused investigations to determine root causes and ensure effective corrective actions are taken.
- Implement and monitor life-saving policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with industry best practices.
Safety and Compliance:
- Develop and oversee regional safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations and priorities.
- Conduct regular branch audits and risk assessments to evaluate program maturity, workplace safety conditions and recommend improvements to implement.
- Lead and/or support accident investigations, providing root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Provide training and coaching to managers, supervisors and employees on safety best practices, including SIF prevention.
- Develop and track safety performance metrics, ensuring continuous improvement in safety outcomes.
- Collaborate with site leaders and HR to manage workers’ compensation cases and return-to-work programs.
- Stay informed on emerging safety regulations and industry trends, ensuring company policies remain current and understood.
- Act as a liaison between corporate safety leadership and regional operations, ensuring alignment on safety initiatives.
Role Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent certification preferred.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in safety and health, with a minimum of 2 years in a people leadership role.
- In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, safety management systems, and high-risk hazard controls.
- Experience in SIF prevention, incident investigation, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and partner at all levels within the organization to influence and prioritize safety.
- Track record of using data insights to inform and shape business strategies and decisions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and safety management software.
- Ability to travel regionally.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in construction, service or other high-risk industries.
- Familiarity with provincial Ministry of Labour and other relevant Canadian regulatory requirements.
- Working in a matrix role, ideally within a global organization.
- Strong leadership, training, and communication skills.
