About the Role
Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Senior Health and Safety Coordinator will play a hands-on role in implementing Health and Safety standards, supporting compliance, and strengthening a positive safety culture.
The successful candidate will work closely with site leadership and employees to provide day-to-day Health and Safety support, conduct inspections and audits, investigate incidents, deliver training, and monitor safety performance.
This role is well suited to a practical Health and Safety professional who can build strong relationships, provide guidance and coaching, and help ensure safety standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements are consistently understood and followed.
This is a one-year contract position.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Implement established Health and Safety standards, policies, procedures, and the Safety Management System (SMS), identifying gaps, supporting priorities, and strengthening safety performance and culture.
- Conduct hazard assessments, workplace inspections, incident investigations, and root cause analyses to identify risks, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement.
- Provide day-to-day Health and Safety support to site leadership and employees, including technical guidance, coaching, regulatory compliance support, risk management, and safe work practices.
- Develop, deliver, and coordinate Health and Safety training and onboarding to ensure employees understand applicable policies, procedures, Life Saving Rules, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct audits, assessments, and verification activities to evaluate compliance with established Health and Safety standards, the SMS, and applicable legislation, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, action plans, and performance metrics to monitor compliance activities, incident trends, corrective actions, and leading indicators.
- Review Health and Safety performance data and emerging risks and provide practical recommendations to improve safety performance and operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate with Operations, Health and Safety, and cross-functional teams to support continuous improvement initiatives and the consistent application of Health and Safety practices.
- Follow up on corrective actions and work with site leadership to ensure identified risks and deficiencies are addressed in a timely manner.
- Support Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs) and other site safety initiatives as required.
What You Need
This position requires initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to organize and prioritize competing tasks in a hands-on operational environment.
Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are required when working with employees, supervisors, managers, and other stakeholders.
- Strong working knowledge of Health and Safety practices, systems, and applicable legislation.
- Practical experience conducting inspections, hazard assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
- Ability to identify safety gaps and risks and translate findings into practical corrective actions.
- Ability to coach and support leaders and employees in the application of safe work practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to analyze safety information and identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Comfortable working in an operational/site environment and engaging directly with employees and site leadership.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and safety management or reporting systems is an asset.
Education and Job Knowledge
- University degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Adult learning theory would be an asset.
Experience
- Three to five years of progressive health and safety experience, preferably in an industrial or operational environment.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registration
- Working toward a recognized professional health and safety designation.
Salary
- $90-95K annually, based on experience and qualifications.
Working Conditions
- Incumbents are required to exert the following physical effort; however, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
- The incumbent will primarily work at and travel to the assigned work site during the course of the working day to conduct Health and Safety inspections and audits, deliver training, provide consultation and support, and observe operations from a Health and Safety perspective.
- Flexibility to travel to Ontario periodically for training, meetings, and other business-related activities is required.
- Occasional travel by car and plane, including overnight travel, may be required.
- Work requires the use of computers, office equipment, and motor vehicles.
- The position may require periods of sitting, with frequent requirements to stand and move about.
- Regular site inspections may require walking, climbing, crouching, and carrying moderately heavy objects (up to 30 lbs.), such as safety supplies and training materials.
Working Environment
Flexibility in working hours is essential for this role to support site operations and varying shift start times.
Exposure to site conditions such as dust, fumes, noise, weather conditions, and moving machinery may be experienced while performing on-site activities.
Mental Concentration
The incumbent may experience moderate mental stress related to meeting deadlines, managing multiple priorities, changing operational needs, and occasional travel.
Considerable concentration is required during investigations, audits, and data analysis, as well as when working around moving machinery and operating a motor vehicle.
