ABOUT THE ROLE
The General Manager, Liquid Resource Recovery reports directly to the Executive Vice President, Environmental and is a member of the Senior Management Team.
The incumbent provides leadership, directs the strategic planning for the growth of business units within Grease Trap Services and is accountable for the profit and loss of Grease Trap Services.
The General Manager, Liquid Resource Recovery has ultimate responsibility for commercial and operational aspects of Grease Trap Services.
They will maintain a sharp focus on delivering operational results that grow revenue and margins, instilling a continuous improvement mindset.
The successful candidate will identify and guide the organization toward the deployment of tools, systems, and processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of sales and operations, to support customer acquisition and retention, revenue and profit growth.
The incumbent will also ensure that Grease Trap Services achieves the highest health and safety, environmental, and quality standards to support the company’s vision of sustainable growth.
This leader is a strategic thinker who has built and led teams, improved their effectiveness and grown revenue organically and through acquisitions.
The individual has acted as a player/coach with their teams and been a trusted partner with stakeholders that include management teams, shareholders, community groups and leaders, customers, suppliers, and potential acquisition targets.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy:
- Work with Grease Trap Services leadership team to refine and communicate goals and a clear strategy to achieve them.
- Identify and exploit market opportunities that draw upon Walker’s competitive advantages and capabilities in a growing market in order to achieve strategic, financial and operational goals.
- Works with the team to drive Walker’s 20-year vision of “Building a Sustainable Future, Together” while aligning the Divisional and Grease Trap Services’ strategy with this vision.
- Develops and fosters strategic alliances with existing and potential customers, government agents, neighbours and industry associates to manage and resolve issues, promote a positive corporate image and identify potential business opportunities.
- Sources, investigates and promotes product development and potential business opportunities to expand market share and increase business growth and revenue.
Growth:
- Links Grease Trap Services’ strategy to a clear execution plan that builds upon its strengths to accelerate profitable growth. Key elements of the plan may include product and service innovation, go-to-market model and capability development, geographic expansion/footprint optimization, and talent and performance metrics development.
- Integrates acquisitions to ensure synergies are achieved and targeted value is delivered.
Operations Improvement:
- Drive organizational capability. Work with the Grease Trap Services leadership team to ensure optimal management of the processes, systems and technology platforms with respect to sales, customer management, routing, servicing, invoicing, procurement, financial planning and analytics, and workforce management.
- Reduce complexity where appropriate and drive agility in decision-making. Ensure that the required processes, systems and controls are in place to guarantee profitable success.
- Provide hands-on leadership on major projects such as valuation of the business and acquisitions to impart expertise and ensure a smooth transition.
- Evaluate, analyze and interpret monthly and year-to-date financial statements to develop strategic plans for Grease Trap Services.
- Prepare, review and approve budgets and capital requests to ensure the business unit is operating at optimal efficiency.
- Visits job sites to ensure adherence to specifications, budgetary constraints and timelines.
- Provides oversight to ensure overall department operations are in compliance with all health and safety, labour and environmental regulatory requirements.
Talent and Culture:
- Takes an active talent management approach to ensure an engaged, stable and productive management team. Onboard, mentor, and inspire Grease Trap Services leaders to achieve high levels of performance. Maintain and enhance competency levels and identify future training requirements.
- Structure the team and delegate delivery to the Department’s management while retaining overall accountability for performance.
- Foster a strong and cohesive team environment. Provide employees with the authority, accountability, training, information and resources to achieve their full potential and successfully drive performance.
- Set a leadership tone that embodies the company’s culture in alignment with broader Walker values and priorities. Reinforce the company’s culture, preserving its essence while evolving to position Grease Trap Services for the future.

- Understand industry direction, relevant regulatory environment, competitors, channel developments, value drivers, and evolving customer needs in order to ensure that Grease Trap Services can properly exploit landscape changes.
- Attend and actively participate in industry associations, conventions, and seminars to maintain current market knowledge, promote business opportunities and foster strategic alliance partner relations.
- Develop positive trust-based relationships with community stakeholders, municipalities, First Nations, and politicians at all levels to reflect Walker’s partnership approach.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires an advanced level of initiative and judgment in order to organize, prioritize and supervise daily tasks. Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are required in dealing with colleagues in every day working relationships.
- Minimum high school graduation, or equivalent level of education, plus an additional two/three-year college diploma – business administration, operations management.
- Proven track record of commercial trucking/logistics/supply chain general management including full P&L responsibility.
- Superior levels of interpersonal and communication skills to promote and foster relationships with existing and potential customers, colleagues and industry associates.
- Advanced numeric skills to analyze and interpret financial information, develop and monitor budgets and recommend improvements to increase profitability.
- Advanced ability to identify business opportunities to develop short and long-term strategic plans.
- Advanced ability to plan and oversee a varied and abstract workload for a large division/department and provide constructive performance feedback.
- Advanced knowledge of unionized policies, procedures and collective agreements.
- Advanced ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems, often complex and abstract in nature.
- Demonstrated computer skills to produce effective reports, documents and presentations.
- Advanced ability to pay close attention to details and make sure work is done correctly and thoroughly. Keeps accurate records.
- Business acumen – advanced understanding of quality standards relative to business management and growth.
- Proficient communication skills, both oral and written, to disseminate information with clarity in one-on-one or group situations.
- Communicates well in writing by composing clear documents; facility with editing and/or proof-reading is required
- In this position, you will analyze current processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes to increase efficiency and productivity. You will also be expected to work closely with cross-functional teams and develop strategies to optimize workflow.
- Provide strong leadership to enhance and promote vision, setting strategic directions, goals, and priorities, and taking a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Responsible for the development and maintenance of a systematic asset management approach including condition and needs assessments, decision impact analysis, monitoring, lifecycle analysis, best practices, benchmarking, and emerging and new technologies.
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with the general public, colleagues, including senior management.

- A valid G Registration Ontario Driver’s Licence in good standing is required for this position.
- Work requires the use of office equipment such as computers, telephones and fax and photocopy machines up to 80% of the time. The incumbent must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
