ABOUT THE ROLE
The Financial Controller oversees the accurate and timely preparation and analysis of all financial information of the Company and guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
This position will also ensure accounting systems are operating efficiently and provide mentorship, guidance, training and support to team members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project and Task Management
- Period-end financial statement process including overseeing the preparation, review and analysis of budget on account reconciliations. Analyze operating results against budget in preparation for presentation to Executive Management for corporate stores and the Company.
- Various weekly, period/quarter end, ad hoc and year-end compliance reporting including, but not limited to, management reporting, insurance requirements, HST/PST, Statistics Canada reporting and year-end audit requirements.
- Support the annual corporate budget, year-end financial statement and audit reporting processes including preparation and review.
- Conduct financial analysis to determine best practices and provide senior management with reports, as required.
- Provide assistance and admin role support on critical current accounting systems (ERP, P2P and budget) and any future technological upgrades.
- Backup to Director, Finance when necessary.
- Ad hoc analysis and special projects as required from time to time.

- Communications with management and others are to be professional, clear, concise, timely, thorough and proactive whenever possible.
- Responsible for consistently and effectively communicating the Company mission, initiatives and objectives to the Finance team.

- Investigation and recommendation of process improvements.
- Provide direct report and other team members with appropriate support and coaching to assist them in resolving issues within their team and assigned workload.
- Troubleshoot issues in a timely and accurate manner with intent to resolve; escalate issues to senior management as required.

- Ensure all documents, reports and communications generated are accurate, print-ready, and meet Company standards. Information is supported by appropriate back-up that substantiates figures and answers all questions.
- Thoroughly reviews own work and the work of other team members to ensure accuracy.

- Work to ensure all tasks and processes are completed properly and on time, and assist other team members where necessary to achieve the same goals.

- Complete tasks per applicable legislation, accounting principles and Company operating policies and procedures.

- Formally recognize strong performers within assigned teams.
- Lead regular team and one-on-one meetings.
- Ensure the overall people plan of the team reflects high standards, bench strength and succession planning, coupled with consistent mentoring and people development.
Analytical Skills
- Conduct financial analysis to determine best practices and provide senior management with reports, as required.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems within the short and long term.
- Promotes and works to maintain workplace wellness, health and safety, through active compliance with all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
- Other relevant tasks as determined and required by management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA).
- Experience in a top-tier accounting firm an asset.
- 5-8 years of experience supervising, leading or managing a finance team.
- 5-8 years of experience working under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
- 8-10 years experience working in finance.
- Detail-oriented approach with demonstrated analytical proficiency including asking questions and digging for answers.
- Demonstrated communication skills (written, verbal and presentations.
- Fluent in English.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of Excel.
- Retail experience is an asset.
- Experience using Microsoft Navision as an asset.
- Experience using an automated P2P system an asset.
- Pride of ownership over assigned responsibilities.
